Who can carry out Safe Isolation?
Employers must satisfy themselves that they have appropriately risk assessed tasks which require workers to safely isolate electrical systems, before undertaking repair or maintenance activity. Employers must demonstrate compliance with all regulatory requirements and any supplementary contract conditions.
Safe isolation procedures are not to be underestimated in terms of risk. Ideally, safe isolation procedures should be undertaken by a Qualified Electrician.
Some employers may wish to rely on safe isolation training for non-electrically qualified building service maintenance workers. Evidence of such training should include the provision of safe isolation kits, barriers, labels, signs, instruments including a check box. On-site supervision and periodic refresher training should also feature in the training plans.
Any disconnection and re connection of electrical systems arising from safe isolation activity should be carried out by a Qualified Electrician.
